The hybrid meeting where the people at home speak too

In almost every hybrid meeting, the people in the room end up talking among themselves, and those at home become spectators. Not out of ill will, but because the room has the advantage of seeing each other, interrupting each other and correcting each other with a glance. This checklist is what I do to keep that from happening.

The long version of this material has over forty points. Nobody ticks forty points while running a meeting, so here there are fourteen, across five moments, and they fit on a single page.

A bright meeting room with a webcam on a tripod pointed at the table and a monitor on the wall showing two participants connected from home; a person in the room has turned toward the screen and is addressing them directly.
The moment the meeting becomes truly hybrid: someone in the room speaks to the screen, not over it.

What is inside

  • The 14 ticks, across five moments: a day before, 10 minutes before, minutes 0-10, 10-45 and 45-60
  • The four moments when a hybrid meeting really breaks down, and what to do in each: two people taking over everything, someone silent for 40 minutes, the connection dropping, the decision made in the corridor after the meeting
  • The four signals I watch in real time to know, at minute 20, whether the meeting is working or only seems to
  • The end test, which takes ten seconds and no tool at all
  • Four A4 pages, to print and put next to your laptop
